This month, our featured guest blogger is Becky Jarvis of Curvy Chic Closet, the Northwest's original Plus Size clothing event, where fashion meets the savvy curvy shopper! Here she tells us all about her upcoming event, and the other incredible work she is up to!
Hello Beautiful People! My name is Becky Jarvis and I am the founder of Curvy Chic Closet & Curvy Chic Closet Foundation. Curvy Chic Closet was established in 2011 and is North America’s largest plus size consignment event. Curvy Chic Closet happens twice a year in the Portland, Oregon area. We bring around 200 consignees together, showcasing 20,000 plus size clothing items, purses, jewelry and shoes.
I started Curvy Chic Closet after realizing that there were no plus size consignment events to help women buy beautiful, gently used plus size clothing. 65% of American women wear a size 14 and above, yet we are left behind in the fashion industry at traditional brick and mortar stores. I am able to offer amazing shopping in one huge location. As a mom, I realized I would buy for my son at the local kids consignment events but never for myself. Thus, I started researching to see what existed. Our first event had 40 consignees and about 2,000 consigned items. At every event, we continue to grow and word of mouth has been our best referral. Our shoppers come from as far north as Seattle, and as far south as Northern California.
The Curvy Chic Closet fashion show was started in the Fall of 2013. Each year, our fashion show continues to evolve and grow. On May 4, 2019 we will be hosting our 12th fashion show. The fashion show was started with 1 designer in 2013. I never envisioned years ago that I would be the Executive Producer of the largest plus size fashion show on the west coast. We now feature local, national and even international designers and retailers on our runway.
I met Hannah with Belle Ampleur in the Spring of 2018. Hannah showcased her beautiful couture designs on our runway. I have continued to follow Hannah’s journey and had the privilege of listening to her be an inspirational speaker this past January at Curves Beautifully Empowered. I look forward to seeing more of Belle Ampleur designs.
We are proud of the 45 women and men that have been cast for the Spring 2019 Fashion Show event, and the models are empowering beautiful plus size people to be role models! Our models range from age 12 to 65, all heights and shapes and abilities as well. We believe that fashion should be for every body. We will be featuring 13 lineups for our fashion show on May 4, 2019. Our show is free because we want to be inclusive of the plus size community. I feel strongly about making sure that teenagers see the beauty of plus size models strutting down the runway. We don’t want the stereotypical models of traditional fashion shows. We are about empowering and inspiring.
This past fall, I decided to create the Curvy Chic Closet Foundation. The Curvy Chic Closet Foundation officially became a 501c3 non-profit organization. Curvy Chic Closet Foundation’s mission is to empower and inspire plus-size individuals to be their best selves through addressing how to overcome body obstacles and developing strong, body-positive advocacy for all.
The vision of the Curvy Chic Closet Foundation is to engage various resources to promote self-confidence and self-love through: biannual fashion shows, model boot camps, empowerment photo shoots, mentoring programs, and by showcasing designers that design plus-size fashion. It is our hope that these programs will develop a strong alliance of empowerment to teens and adults who can carry our mission forward to inspire others in our community.
I am very excited about our first youth empowerment workshop. You Are Enough is a free youth workshop that is scheduled for May 18th at Cobalt Studio PDX. Pre-registration is required to participate. I hope to schedule an adult empowerment workshop this summer.
Curvy Chic Closet is joining forces with Free Food Ministries, a nonprofit organization that supports the local community. Attendees can bring toiletry items in exchange for FREE Presale Admission ($5 value). Toiletry Items are accepted any time during the 4 day event.
Another worthy charity to benefit from Curvy Chic Closet's generosity is Gung Ho Ministries, a women's resale shop that generates income to help serve homeless veterans, the needy, and the underprivileged. In the past seven years, Curvy Chic Closet's consignees have donated approximately 30,000 pounds of goods to Gung Ho Ministries, helping countless women to dress for success and improve their lives and circumstances.
On the night of the fashion show, Curvy Chic Closet Foundation hosts a raffle fundraiser. Raffle tickets are $1 each. We will have some amazing gift baskets available!
This exciting extravaganza kicks off with a special $5 pre-sale event on Thursday, May 2 from 11 AM to 2 PM. After the pre-sale event, all attendees can continue to enjoy shopping on Thursday, May 2 from 2 PM to 8 PM, Friday, May 3 from 10 AM to 8 PM, Saturday, May 4 from 10 AM to 8 PM, and Sunday, May 5 from 10 AM to 5 PM (with many consignees offering their goods for 50% off).
